Shop: Brass Pineapple

20 May

Yes people, Independent Shop of the Week makes a return… in the form of Brass Pineapple all the way up in Kendal, Cumbria after a lovely weekend spent in The Lake District.

The Urban Dictionary definition… Brass Pineapple: Given name to objects stolen from pubs in retaliation for expensive drinks.

In actuality it’s a cute little shop just off the High Street, started by two designer friends who met at Carlisle University. They make unique upcycled dresses through combining different prints/fabrics/pieces:

Inside the shop they also have unusual accessories and homeware such as lego/domino rings and records that have been melted into bowls!

I instantly fell in love with this polka dot and paisley number, and it was a real bargain down from £20 to £10!

polka dot paisley dressI styled it with a Primark black leather and gold metal belt, black tights and Office chunky leather lace up boots. The boyfriend took  me on a cinema date and told me I looked like “Maid Marion biker style”….. boys eh?! To keep warm I added my Zara leather jacket:

Is my Biker Maid Marion look a hit or a miss?! Let me know in the comments!

I’d love to blog about more Independent Shops so let me know your favourite and I’ll pop down and write a review.

How to: Glamour Waves

9 Nov

I was lucky enough to be invited to the multi-award winning Brooks and Brooks salon for a little pampering session this week and thought I’d share the fabulous evening I had with you all with a how to blog post.

The Salon is on the lovely Sicilian Avenue (nearest tube Holborn), which had such beautiful Christmas lights!

I got to choose from a selection of on trend hair looks including vintage undo, sexy blowout, mussy relaxed updo and beachy waves:

I decided to try something a little bit different and chose the “glamour waves” look as I’ve never had anything like that before…. AND I’d never seen a curling tong like this one either….!

Sophia, my technician, and I had lots of giggles about this… and step one was to spray my roots with Batiste for brown hair for a bit of volume and then blow dry to really smooth out the length of my hair:

Then Sophia wrapped my hair around the tongs in sections and pinned it all up to cool (to prevent the curls from dropping)

Then she unpinned all my curls and I had some amazing ringlets!

I quite liked this girly look, but to make it all a bit sophisticated, she brushed the curls out and with her hairdressers magic made it look like this:

Outfit

Black Velvet Dress (worn as skirt): Primark

Black long sleeve top: ASOS

Studded Tiger Print Cardigan: Topshop

Spike Necklace: Primark

GameBoy iPhone Case: Play.com

I told Sophia that I usually curl my hair with my GHD’s and she said if I curled it all in the same direction and then brushed it out, it would create a similar look. Something I’ll definitely be trying out.

There were some seriously cute face cookies with amazing hairdos too!

I had such a fabulous time at Brooks & Brooks that I booked in to get my natural hair colour spiced up! I’m very excited about this, let me know if you have any suggestions about what kind of look you think I should go for.

Where do you get your hair done? What’s your favourite hair trend for Autumn/Winter 2012? I’d love to know,

Event: Night at the Museum

31 Oct

So on Friday night I had the pleasure of attending Lates at Natural History Museum. With no idea what to expect, I took the boyfriend along to see what it was all about. Firstly, we stopped off for dinner at the amazing Crémerie Crêperie which appears to be my favourite South Kensington eatery!

Then we hit the museum which is all ceremoniously lit up (not sure whether this is for Halloween or Christmas?):

Inside the famous Diplodocus Central hall was buzzing – there’s a bar and live music throughout the event:

We had a good old browse around the birds section and saw a whole lot of fossils too! Slightly more dated and a bit creepier was the insect area…. not for the faint hearted! And of course there’s the renowned Dinosaur gallery which really is quite incredible:

These sections of the museum were fairly quiet, but their current exhibition Wildlife Photographer of the Year was totally sold out. I’d definitely recommend it, there are some really impressive photos taken by both professionals and joe average (I’m going to try and enter next year!). Here are just a few of my favourites:

Also in attendance was The Campsite, a pop up creative arts area outside the museum with Campervans, caravans and tents. Here you can watch a Wildlife movie in Lionel the white Campervan or tell a Natural History related story in the Archivist van. (Popping up until November 2nd!).

What I Wore (ever so casual):

Grey Woolly Jumper – H&M

Leather Jacket –  Zara

Jeans – Topshop

Tartan Scarf – Car Boot Sale

Red Bobble Hat – Primark

Maroon Converse (not hi tops!) – Office

Grey Textured Shoulder Bag – All Saints

The next Lates at the Natural History Museum (and last of the series) will be taking place on 30th November. If you are looking for an unusual place to go on a date or after work drinks with colleagues/friends, this is ideal! It’s also open throughout the week for a more traditional museum visit, and my favourite festive ice rink opens there on Friday!

Have you been to any good exhibitions lately? I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to museums and galleries, and love them nearly as much as shopping!

Trendwatch: Arm Party

2 Aug

So you may have noticed a new little icon on my side bar: ‘Bloggers Do It Better‘. In the words of its creator: ‘It’s a movement. An initiative to showcase real girls, with real style, wearing real trends.

Every month bloggers are challenged to wear a trend and this month it’s the ‘Arm Party’. Here watches/bracelets/bangles/cuffs are worn simultaneously and get to have a rather good time together. Then all the bloggers posts are linked up on the BDIB page and we get to see how real people wear the latest trends – cool idea right?!

My favourite arm party is ‘The Stacker’. This generally consists of piling up every bangle I own (I don’t want anyone to feel left out!).

First in lovely metallics, which go with everything:

All of the above – H&M

Styled for a night out:

Dress – Primark (£5)

Shoes – Topshop (£75)

Belt – Primark (£2)

And then it’s time for its quirky relative, the coloured plastic bangle. I personally love putting them all on one arm:

Neon and Metal Bangles – H&M

Chunky Blue Bangles – Miss Selfridge

Silver Ring – H&M

Black Ring – Primark

Gold Detail Ring – Primark (£2)

Or if that’s a bit too much, separate them on to both wrists:

Suede Shorts – Topshop

Colour Block T-shirt – Primark (£8)

Gold Leaf Ring – Topshop

I love the Arm Party as it’s a way of standing out and being on trend without having to splurge. Just pull out whatever you have in your jewellery box and you’re set! (All of my bangles are from 2007)

How do you wear yours?

As you can tell I was a tad unprepared for the photo but love my new do, and my stylist Anna was so nice!

Hope you have a lovely weekend 🙂

Happy Birthday Gaga!

28 Mar

Today is the 25th birthday of none other than LADY GAGA. I thought this deserved a mention seeing as she’s pretty much THE fashionista of the moment. I love the woman, and her sense of style. I mean why blend in when you can stand out?!

I may have taken this one step too far at her MONSTER BALL concert last year…. where I dressed up a la Gaga (not your average Nottingham visitor). People kept stopping me asking for photos and the bouncers even let me in the VIP area (fine… I may have paid for the VIP tickets… but still!).

I made the outfit by adding some cardboard and aluminium foil to a dress from the ASOS sale (£20)…. bought the glasses from Primarni (£2!)…. and leather fingerless gloves from Topshop (£15 but well worth it!). Teamed with Gaga-tastic heels I bought waaaay back in 2005, ripped fishnet tights and the best blonde wig I could afford as a poor student.

What do you think? Separated at birth? I’m the one on the right if you can’t tell us apart 😉 haha!

Happy Birthday Gaga…. celebrate in style, and I look forward to seeing what outfit you wear to your birthday bash in tomorrow’s fashion pages.
