How to: Make a Cheesecake

12 Dec

I recently made my very first cheesecake and as it was such a success I felt the need to share it with you all. It’s from the book Cake Magic by Kate Shirazi and I purchased this from TK Maxx – I highly recommend you checking out their recipe book section as there are some serious bargains to be had (this was £5.99! RRP £14.99).

You’ll need:

100g unsalted butter (melted)

100g chocolate digestives crushed

100g ginger biscuits crushed

900g cream cheese

175g caster sugar

4 large free range eggs (beaten)

150g raspberries (frozen or fresh)

Instructions:

Pre-heat the oven to 160 degrees celsius. Grease and line a 20cm cake tin and wrap it in kitchen foil.

Pour the melted butter over the biscuit crumbs and stir to make a sandy mixture. Tip into the tin, press down with the back of a spoon and pop the tin in the fridge to firm it up.

Beat the cream cheese and caster sugar then add the eggs (I did this gradually). Distribute the mistureon top of the biscuit base, then pop the raspberries on top and push them down slightly until you feel they are equally distributed throughout the cake.

Put the tin in a roasting tin (or another dish – I used a glass one) and pour enough water to come halfway up the cake tin. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the cheesecake has set but still has a good wobble in the middle ( 1-2 hours in my oven!).

Take the tin out of the bain marie and leave to cool. (I left mine to cool outside for couple of hours but would recommend cooling it overnight).

TA DA! All done. It does seem quite complicated but it was really very simple to make (and cost effective too!). And boy was it scrummy, even if it still was a little warm in the middle!

What’s your favourite cake recipe? I do love a bit of baking and would love to try some new recipes.

Let me know your thoughts on my inclusion of lifestyle posts, as you may be seeing more of them in the future.

Launch: Margiela at H&M

20 Nov

Last week I stopped by the launch of Margiela at H&M at their Flagship Store on Regent Street.

It was a rather busy event, and they had a queue outside which formed the night before. Entry to purchase Margiela was via coloured wrist bands distributed in the queue.

Inside the store, the display felt like a museum exhibit, only adding to the limited appeal of these items.

In store my personal favourites included a quirky puff sleeve shirt, black jersey dress and suede jacket, but as I’m saving for a Winter Sun holiday, I stayed controlled and simply admired all these beauties. (May be popping back this week to see if there’s anything left and then using the “it’s meant to be” line to convince myself to purchase!

I’d definitely recommend checking out the website, not only for the flawless design experience but also the comfort of browsing in a calmer demeanor than the average Regent Street shopper!

I also enjoyed the “Who bought What” post on The Guardian Fashion Blog from Launch Day.

What’s your favourite piece from the collection? Have you bought any Margiela goodies?

Bonjour Paris

23 Feb

So here are some VERY belated photos from my trip to Paris the week before Christmas (better late than never right?!). We stayed very near the department store Galeries Lafayette, where they had a huge Christmas tree hanging in their beautiful domed ceiling for the Festive season. In their gift section, I discovered the biggest jar of Nutella…. I really wanted it but I decided there wasn’t enough room in my suitcase (sad times)! Outside there was a street pianist, with a proper piano! The music was beautiful and really set the scene.

We did all the sights, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Eiffel Tower, The Louvre… and the pastry shops and the vintage shops! Thanks for the recommendations you sent me on Twitter, I was blown away by the vintage Chanel and Hermés at Didier Ludot:

Paris Outfit of the Day:

Coat: Miss Selfridge

Jeans: Leigh from Topshop

Bag: Mulberry Bayswater

Scarf: H&M

Gloves: Mulberry

Tiger Print Studded Cardigan: Topshop

I was generally being quite controlled with shopping during my trip, but it all went a bit pear-shaped on entry to Sephora… details in the haul video below!

We watched Amelié whilst we were there, but didn’t get a chance to visit Montmatre (where the film is set) so I’d love to go back when it’s a bit warmer to visit.

Have you had the chance to visit la belle Paris? What are your favourite Paris haunts/shops?

What a birthday!

17 Jan

So as I mentioned it was my birthday last weekend! I made a real event of it and began with a trip to the Cremerie Creperie in South Kensington along with the boyfriend. It was full of French people, which we thought was a great sign. I had the tuna and sweetcorn crepe. It. was. YUMMY!

Then we headed over to the Victoria and Albert Museum to check out the Postmodernism exhibition which I’ve been wanting to visit since it opened back in September.

Grey Angora Sweater Dress – Topshop

Black Lace Dress (under sweater) – Motel

Brown Coat – Topshop

Teal Faux Fur Snood – Topshop

Grey Leather Bag – All Saints

Black tights and knee high socks – Primark

Black Ankle Boots – Office

I enjoyed the exhibition and found it really interesting, however I wasn’t sure what to feel when I left it. Just quite overwhelmed, it definitely left a lasting impression though! My favourite part was the postmodern tea sets which I found quite fascinating!

We stopped to watch a bit of ice skating at the Natural History Museum, which was a rather beautiful sight! The boyfriend took me skating here for my birthday last year after dark and I’d definitely recommend it.

Then we headed to The Wolseley for afternoon tea (P.O.S.H.) and it was rather scrumptious. We got a selection of  sandwiches, cakes and scones which we actually couldn’t finish! The Wolseley blend was amazing and up there along with my favourite tea in the whole world (Twinings Assam if you must know!).

Later we met with a few friends for dinner and I was given two amazing cakes from The Hummingbird Bakery, red velvet and their standard cupcake. These were literally the best cakes I’ve EVER eaten (and I’ve eaten quite a lot in my time!). I also got given 7 new varnishes, which will no doubt be featuring in upcoming NOTW posts!

My aunt got me the perfect birthday card:

I had a lovely day and felt rather spoiled at the end of it, I feel so lucky to have such amazing friends and family!

A big thanks to everyone who entered my MAC birthday giveaway, the winner will be announced on Thursday.

Travels – Bangkok

18 Oct

(Continued from Travels – Vietnam and Travels – Cambodia)

So I then went from Battambong in Cambodia overland into Thailand and my final stop was Bangkok. I’ve been there before and it is one of my favourite places in the WORLD (rivalling London and New York!).

The City:

Downpour on my shopping trip to Khao San Road:

Some tasty treats:

I really enjoyed by few days in Bangkok and it’s where I did most of my shopping. Also who doesn’t love a good Thai Curry?

I made a little travelling vlog too, showing you some of the bits I bought:

And this is the last of my travel posts so normal fashion/beauty posts will resume in the next few days!

Travels – Cambodia

10 Oct

(Continued from Travels – Vietnam)

I went overland from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam into the beautiful Cambodia. I spent 2 days in Phnom Penh, the capital city where I visited the Grand Palace:

We went on to Siem Reap and visited the Night Markets (time for some shopping!):

Then it was time to visit the Temples… my main reason for wanting to visit Cambodia… simply stunning:

Sunrise at Angkor Wat was just breathtaking:

The Khmer people are so unbelievably friendly and all the kids speak perfect English, it totally blew me away!

I loved Cambodia so much and could’ve spent months at the Temples.  I’d definitely recommend visiting if you can, it’s a beautiful country.

It’s taken, like, Forever…

27 Jul

My love affair with American brand Forever 21 started a few years ago, when visiting family in Dubai. I came across the store in the Mall of the Emirates and was blown away by the range, quality and prices. My amour only grew when visiting New York’s Union Square Forever 21 store last month – a shopping spree which lasted two whole hours!

So I’m excited to finally have one right on my doorstep and can’t wait to check it out! With reasonable prices and an ever-altering range of clothing and accessories, I think it’s really going to shake up the UK high street. A rival for H&M and New Look, there’s officially a new place for teens and twenty-something’s to shop.

As a celebration, Forever 21 are offering 10% off when you spend £35 (easily done, trust me) in the Oxford Street store today with the following voucher, as well as free shipping online for 2 days with the code OXSHIP (effective 27/7/11, 12am – 28/7/11 11:59pm GMT).

I’ve put together a couple of looks featuring their pieces, to give you an idea of what to expect from the brand. First a casual outfit, perfect for a day at the shops:

Featuring: Paint stroke woven top (£15.75), Basic Skinny Jeans (£8.75!), Sparkling Bunny Earrings (£2.40), Serpentine and Rope Necklace (£3.90), Oxford Lace Ups (£18.75) and Messenger Bag (£29.75)

And for a night out on the town, this rock-inspired look:

Folded Leatherette Wedges (£22.75), Leopard Print Dress (£19.75), Soft Leatherette Clutch (£12), Studded Bracelet (£5.65), Arrowhead Earrings (£3.15) – to be teamed with very smokey eyes!

If I’m going to be totally honest with you, I’m finding the site a real nightmare to navigate, but I’m loving their ‘Perfect Dress’ selection, which teams cute dresses with quirky accessories:

As well as ‘Shop These Looks’ which does all the hard work for you.

Are you looking forward to embracing this ‘new’ brand on Oxford Street? Do let me know if you buy anything, or if you’ve got any Forever 21 favourites that you think I should have a look at!

Trendwatch: British Pride

26 Apr

So… the royal wedding is nearly here and I’m having a Royal Wedding Garden Party!!!!!!! Yay!

BUT… what to wear?!

I’ve gone with the theme British Pride:

and discovered these beauties:

Religion Union Jack Leggings (£35)

ASOS Lightening Bolt Crop Top (£18)

Amplified T-Shirt (was £25 now £14)

Religion Union Jack Printed Body (£35)

Union Jack Smile Tee by Little Fox (£25)

Or you could be very thrifty and make yourself a top/dress out of a flag (I’ve found this one for £1.66!)

There are numerous British-inspired necklaces out there and these are some that caught my eye:

L-R Hoolala God Save the Queen Necklace (£38), Cath Kidston Union Jack Locket Necklace (£35) and Butler and Wilson Union Jack Pendant (£58).

Hoolala have a wonderous amount of charm necklaces and bracelets incoporating the trend, as well as loads of other cute themed pieces (Wizard of Oz and Puss in Boots to name a couple!).

What are you going to be wearing to celebrate the occasion?
